GRAPHIC NOVEL STORYTELLING PROJECT

An anime inspired graphic novel preserving the history and whakapapa of Karuwai Marae through visual storytelling.

OVERVIEW

Karuwai Marae is a graphic novel project based on the history and whakapapa connected to Karuwai Marae on the East Coast of Aotearoa. The project explores how graphic storytelling and visual narrative can be used to preserve and communicate Māori histories in a way that feels engaging and accessible for younger audiences.

PROBLEM

Many Māori histories and local narratives are difficult to access, especially for younger generations growing up in digital environments. A lot of these stories remain within oral traditions or archived materials that are not easily available or engaging for wider audiences. This creates a risk of important cultural knowledge becoming disconnected from younger generations over time.

KEY INSIGHT

Through research and conversations with whānau and community members, I realised that storytelling can act as a bridge between traditional knowledge and contemporary audiences. I also recognised the importance of approaching Māori narratives with care and responsibility, ensuring the stories remain grounded in their original cultural context rather than being reshaped purely for entertainment..

CONCEPT

The concept was to create an anime inspired graphic novel based on the history of Karuwai Marae and the story behind the whakataukī “Te Hiku o Mahiti, Te Rehu o Karuwai.” The project combines cinematic visual storytelling, character design, and editorial pacing to create a narrative experience that feels engaging while still respecting the cultural significance of the story.
