KĀPATA

KAI

ONLINE SOCIAL SUPERMARKET

A digital supermarket designed to support
whānau through accessible, dignified
access to kai.

OVERVIEW

Kāpata Kai is a social supermarket concept designed to address food insecurity for whānau in Aotearoa. The project explores how a points based digital platform can support communities while maintaining dignity, accessibility, and choice.

PROBLEM

Food insecurity affects many whānau across Aotearoa, with existing systems often limiting choice and removing a sense of dignity. Many support systems can feel transactional or restrictive, which creates a barrier for people who need access to kai in a way that feels respectful and empowering.

KEY INSIGHT

Through research, I found that access to food is not just about affordability, but also about dignity, independence, and cultural connection. This shifted my approach from designing a system that simply provides food, to one that allows people to choose what they need in a way that feels normal and supportive.

CONCEPT

The concept is a digital supermarket where users can use a points based system to access food. Instead of receiving pre selected items, users can browse and choose what suits their needs, creating a more flexible and empowering experience. The system is designed to feel familiar, accessible, and community focused.
